The Ngorongoro Crater is unusual among safari destinations in that its wildlife rarely leaves — the crater floor's permanent water and grazing means most resident animals simply stay put year-round.
Why the density is so high
At roughly 260 square kilometres, the crater floor is small enough that a single morning drive covers a meaningful portion of it, concentrating sightings in a way that larger reserves can't match.
What to expect
Crowding on the crater floor itself is real — vehicle numbers are capped but it's still one of the more visited spots in Tanzania. Arriving at the gate right at opening time makes a genuine difference.
How we usually schedule it
One full day on the crater floor, staying at a rim lodge the night before and after, rather than trying to combine it with a rushed transit day.
